Metro Energy - M & T Oil Co’s history in South Boston can be traced back to over 90 years ago in 1929. Manoug Markarian, a man of Armenian descent, immigrated from the Anatolian section of Turkey. He eventually settled here and began delivering ice and coal to the people of South Boston from his truck.

Manoug’s two sons, Mike and Toros, when they were old enough, used to go out after school and help out their father. In 1944, before completing high school, Mike and Toros joined the Navy during WWII. When they got out of the Navy in 1946, they took the business and turned it into a full-service oil heat company. In 1959, it was incorporated as M & T Oil Company.

After the passing of Mike in 1982, Toros made several acquisitions, helping the business to grow over the years. In 1989, Toros changed the company name from M & T Oil Company to Metro Energy. The new name is a more accurate reflection of the area served by the operation which reaches into the greater Boston and suburban areas.

A sign sporting the former name of the company remains at a prominent corner of the building, and the folks in the neighborhood still refer to Metro Energy as M & T.

An important part of being involved in the community means helping out the people in it. The front window of the company’s office is full of trophies from the neighborhood teams. The company sponsors local basketball leagues, Boston Youth Soccer League, South Boston Little League, and is a supporter of the Boys and Girls Club.

Today, Toros’ daughter Brenda and his two sons, Thomas and Edward, along with their staff celebrate over nine decades of continued dedication. We have been serving the heating needs of the greater Boston and the surrounding metro area.
